Rocky Mountain Backpacking Adventure

This year's BCO trip to the Colorado Rockies will be a backpacking trip. We will rent cabins for our base and take 2 backpacking trips into the mountains. One to Medicine Bow Wyoming and the other into the Indian Peaks Wilderness where we will camp for 2 nights at Crater Lake and spend a day exploring a glacier.

This trip is rated difficult. Most of the hiking is at 9,000 feet and above. You must have been on several backpacking trips including at least one multi-day trip. This is also bear country and we will need to carry bear cannisters (these can be rented in town).

August 17, fly to Denver. Everyone needs to arrive by 10:30 am. We will pick up a van at the airport. On the way from the airport to Grand Lake, we will stop and pick up backpacking supplies, have lunch and see part of Rocky Mountain National Park.

August 18, will be for sight seeing and hiking the Colorado River Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park. 

August 19 & 20, we will head to the Sugar Loaf area of Medicine Bow Wyoming. We will backpack out to some lakes and set up camp. We can fish and maybe catch dinner. The following day we will hike back out and return to our Grand Lake cabins.

August 21, we will spend another day in Rocky Mountain National Park. I will take the group to see some 3,000 year old Indian drive trail remnants.

August 22  - 24, we will backpack into the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Aug 22 we will hike about 7 miles from Monarch Lake to Crater Lake. Along the way will pass Cascade Falls. Pass Mirror Lake and set up camp at Crater Lake for 2 nights. The next day we will hike another 2 - 3 miles and explore the Peck Glacier and Fair Glacier, spend the night. The following day we will hike out and head back to the cabins.

August 25, fly home. Flights must leave 1  pm or later. If you are staying to climb the 14er, this will be a rest day.
