CAMP HCO: 2018 Big Bend Adventure

October 23 - 27th 2018

note: this is our Sister Club, Hill County Outdoors (HCO)'s Trip. If you want to join them, please email Eva at administrator@Hillcountryoutdoors.com and she will get you registered.

We'll have four nights in Big Bend National Park to explore some of the most scenic country in Texas, heck, the world!  We'll be camping in the group campground in the Chisos Basin. There's an abundance of natural riches to explore inside the park and activities include hiking, paddling, rock climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, stargazing, and even a day trip to sunny Mexico. Organized activities will get posted to the HCO calendar as we get closer to the trip date.

Mark your calendar for our pre-trip planning meeting on October 1st to discuss what to bring, what to expect, etc. We will arrange carpooling and have a sign-up sheet to assign camp kitchen duties. After the meeting, a trip info packet will be sent to the rsvp list which includes a list of our campsites and a packing list.

Big Bend National Park encompasses more than 800,000 acres in southwest Texas. For more than 1,000 miles, the Rio Grande forms the international boundary between Mexico and the United States; Big Bend National Park administers approximately one-quarter of that boundary. Within the 118 twisting miles that also define the park’s southern boundary, the river’s southeasterly flow changes abruptly to the northeast and forms the “big bend” of the Rio Grande.

Transportation

Transportation will be by carpool. Carpooling can be arranged at the pre-trip meeting. We will have a carpool sign up sheet that you can add your name to. It isn't our responsibility to find you a carpool buddy so if you want to ride with someone, please make plans to attend the pre-trip meeting and make your arrangements.

On the first day of the trip, most folks leave by 7 am from Austin to drive out there. Drive time is 8 to 9 hours with stops. If leaving from Houston, allow a bit more time.

Meals

The trip cost includes all 11 meals cooked at camp including a hot dinner the first night that you arrive; Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner; and a light continental breakfast on the last morning. Breakfast includes hot, freshly brewed coffee. Meals will be prepared in a community kitchen at camp.  Everyone will be asked to pitch in with meal preparation, cleaning and camp kitchen duties. Bring snacks if you want, and your own adult beverages (BYOB). Dining and cooking gear (pots, stoves, disposable plates, etc.) will be provided by the club.

Please email administrator@hillcountryoutdoors.com if you have any dietary restrictions. We can accommodate gluten-free and vegetarian diets upon request.

What to Bring

You will need to bring your own personal camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, flashlight, etc). Pack and dress in layers - it can get really cold at night and hot as blazes during the day so pack accordingly. An air mattress or sleeping pad is highly recommended - the ground is hard out there, and ear plugs too - those bears snore pretty loud in West Texas! Bring your passport, if you have one. The automated border crossing is NOW OPEN into sunny Mexico. We will take a day trip into the tiny Mexican town of Boquillas for anyone interested.? A packing list will be provided after the pre-trip meeting.

*Please note: There is an extreme water shortage in the park. Please bring 3 gallons of your own drinking water.

Additionally, showers will need to be taken at Rio Grande Village.  We were not able to secure a room at the lodge for showers this year.  Rio Grande Village charges $2.00 for 5 minutes.  Bring your own shower gear including towels/shampoo/soap and any other toiletries you require.

Bon voyage partyWe will have a farewell dinner and themed party on the last night of the trip. More info to come...
