2018 Houston History Conference:

The Amazing Stories of Houston Women

On Saturday, October 6, 2018, from 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM, hear some of Houston’s most exceptional women, who have actually lived and made Houston’s history, reflect on their own experiences. The speakers we’ve assembled are history-makers from the political, legal and academic communities, government, and founders and leaders of community service organizations. Speakers include Ellen Cohen, Linda Cohn, Renee Cross, Tanya Debose, Ada Edwards, Judge Phyllis Frye, Dorothy Gibbons, Elizabeth Gregory, Nikki Van Hightower, Kristen Contos Krueger, Annise Parker, Gracie Saenz… The keynote is by Dr. Ruth Simmons, president of Prairie View University and former president of both Smith and Brown Universities. Each is a trailblazer. Each is dangerous in that they have lived their lives challenging boundaries. Each is ambitious to create change. Read all about them on HHA's website.

The Houston History Alliance (HHA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting the public to Houston’s history, in cooperation with Houston’s many history-centric organizations. HHA holds an annual conference on a Houston History theme, this year, a one-day presentation of panels and roundtable discussions entitled “Houston Women: Agitating, Educating, Advocating.”  This year’s conference is part of a 60 day city-wide series of events presenting Tales of Houston Women.

The conference will include a Houston Popup Museum, free to the public, featuring exhibits by Houston-area history and humanities-focused organizations. The Popup Museum is sponsored by the University of Houston Center for Public History.

The conference will be held at the beautiful Match center at 3400 South Main at Holman. Public transportation and parking arrangements are given here.

You can register for the conference here. General admission includes lunch catered by the great Claire Smith of Canopy and Alice Blue restaurants. Admission is $65 plus a $5.68 fee, discounted admission for teachers, and free admission for students (not including lunch).

PLEASE RSVP so we can arrange opportunities to meet up.
