Ride overview

Texas gained independence from Mexico after the Battle of San Jacinto near Houston on April 21, 1836, with Texas forces led by Sam Houston. The battle followed an invasion of Texas by Mexico in which a number of Texans were killed and others imprisoned in Mexico during the war. Houston was founded almost immediately thereafter by the enterprising Allen brothers. On this ride, we will see cemeteries holding veterans of the war with Mexico, several homes of Sam Houston including his “executive mansion” while Texas Republic president. We will see sites associated with the Allen brothers, founders of Houston, including one of their graves, one of their home sites, Allens Landing where Houston was founded, and their brand new statues at City Hall (see the photo caption for the fascinating story of the statues’ origin).

We will also see other historic cemeteries, streets named for Texas Revolution figures, the home site of one Revolution figure imprisoned in Mexico during the war, and the site of Houston’s first hospital in 1837, founded by Ashbel Smith who later founded the University of Texas and became its first president. All the sites are marked and annotated on the route map and most are included in the route photo album.
